Basking Ridge/Bernards Township, New Jersey
Bernards Township, New Jersey is rich in the traditions of the early years of American history. In 1760, George III of Great Britain established its predecessor called Bernardston Township. At the times of the American Revolution, as many as 100 area men responded to the call to join the militia. In December 1776, Continental Army General Charles Lee, second in command to George Washington, was captured by the British here.
Today, Bernards Township is characterized by a recently coined word "rurban". New office development has turned the area into a major employment center. While substantial residential development has reduced open space, relatively low densities and clustered designs have left large tracts of woodlands untouched. Bernards Township covers an area of 25 square miles and includes the communities of Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner and Lyons.
